SWFA/MFL Concussion Policy
Introduction
The MFL has adopted a policy aimed at the prevention and proper treatment of concussions among our players. While our safety record has been excellent, it must be recognized that in any vigorous activity injury is possible. The MFL believes that it is important that concussions have a specific policy due to both their potential serious consequences and the fact that it is only recently that the seriousness of this injury has been shown to be greater than previously believed.
It is hoped that this policy will provide a basis for minimizing the possibility of this injury as well as educate our players, volunteers and parents in the recognition of the symptoms of a concussion, appropriate treatment and provide a standard policy for determining when a player is able to safely return to practice and play.
In all cases the MFL recognizes that the professionals in our medical community are the ones that must be relied on for diagnosis and treatment regimes but our policy provides a procedure that all players who suffer a concussion must follow before return to full contact practice or play. It may be that a players doctor may require a stricter regimen and in that case the doctors advice takes precedence.
